Look Out Cruel World!

I did it! I finally graduated! ...okay so four years is average, but sometimes I felt like it would never end.

Not that I need it, but I won't get the diploma until like April. Lame, I know. Anyways, I now have a Bachelors of Accounting from the David Eccles School of Business.

I was always told to be patient and it would be worth it in the end...alright cruel world, make it worth it :)

Workin' the 9 to 5...or 6.

Well...it happened...after 20+ interviews, 3 offers, 2 declines and an accept later, I am officially an employee of McCann Erickson!

McCann is a global advertising agency that does work with companies from Verizon to Microsoft. The Salt Lake office houses about 200 employees.

I accepted a position as a client accountant. I started on the 18th and worked for four days until the office closed on Christmas Eve. So, I will settle in on the 5th, working with 9 others working on the finance team. I will be able to work with another department to service our clients and make sure we come in on budget and open and close our advertising jobs on time. Yeah, I know it sounds boring, but it is a job and I am so excited to get started!

Those Days...

Do you ever have those days where your socks don't match. Your finals are almost too much to deal with. You have had 5 interviews this week totaling 17 overall causing the problem that you can't remember what you wore to the first interview and are afraid you might wear the same thing when they call you into the second interview. You need to move, but you just don't have enough time. You are secretly hoping that Christmas isn't that close so you have enough time to shop. And all you want to do is run. Ever have those days? Yeah... me too :)
*I made sure the tops matched just in case someone could see them. And no, I did not wear them to the interviews.

Giving Thanks.

The last couple of days I have been going through a lot of the things I am thankful for and fortunate I am to live the life I live. After reading others lists of thanks, I couldn't help but write one up of my own.

Family: Whether I like it or not, they will always be there for me. Recently, I have found that family is really what gets you through the rough times and will always support you. I love that we all get along even though we are all so different.

My Feet: I am really hard on my feet and expect them to just keep going even when I don't protect them the way I should. They give me one of the greatest joys in life, my ability to run. I don't know what I would do without that.

Unemployment: Yeah, this is a little opposite of everyone else, but there have been some very positive things about my unemployment experience. I have been able to do projects I have been putting off and also I have been able to pay attention to areas in my life that have gone on the back burner because of work. It has been a nice change of pace.

The Girls: I don't know how I would get by without the advice and hilarious commentary of those two. Daily facebook emails and weekly lunch/dinner. They keep me sane.

Friends: From roommates to high school friends to everyone in between. I am grateful for all of them. I think I go to the grocery store way more than necessary, but it is usually with a different person from Melrose every time. High school friends for those times when you just need a little trip down memory lane. And to all of my other friends...they all keep my life interesting.

Utah Football: The highlight of my fall and something that will always bring us together. How could I not love it?

Talents: Over the course of the last month I have tried to work on developing my talents. I am thankful that I have the ability to cook, decorate, take pictures, and even clean (yes I find this to be a great talent).

I hope everyone has a great thanksgiving and can enjoy everything they are thankful for :)

Loved?

Last night I had the opportunity to go see a sneak preview of Four Christmases with Stacey. Since it was a sneak preview we weren't allowed to have our phones. I know what you are thinking "Kate went more than 15 minutes without her phone?" It can be done. I digress. After the movie, I scurry to turn on the phone to see if the world kept revolving even though I was not apart of it. It did. And I had 8 text messages to catch me up. I got one from my mom saying "Hey can you come by before you go home?" Though, the thought did cross my mind, I didn't even ask why. I just replied "Yeah."

The whole way to my parents I kept thinking 'I sure hope everyone is okay. She would have at least called if someone was in the hospital or died, right?" Short panic attack ensued thereafter.

I walk in the door to find quiet... after a cheerful hello. phew. Quick glance to the left, red roses. Hmm...'are those for me?' They were!

Supposedly it was supposed to be a surprise, though I would have figured it out, even if my mom didn't tell me. Maybe he reads my blog, or maybe he just likes me. Either way, my living room is cuter now that it has some roses added to the decor. :)
Like the vase...?

Thoughts of the day...

Being that I am still unemployed, run a lot, pretend to study a lot and have a lot of time to do nothing...I have a lot of time to think. These are my thoughts for the day. If I get the motivation, I might do this more often.

  • I am really out of it when it comes to music. I love Joshua Radin, that is enough for me.
  • I decided I need flowers. Recently, I saw this enormous bouquet of flowers sent to someone. They were gorgeous. I was jealous.
  • True Love: Your girlfriend wants to go for a run, at night. You ride your bike next to her to make sure nothing happens to her.
  • The mind has so much more endurance than the body. I would work out a lot more if the body could keep up with my mind.
  • You don't realize how much you like to work until you don't do it. Don't get me wrong, this free time is great. But a feeling of people needing me is also a good thing.
  • I think I'm allergic to my own sweat. After I work out, I have rashes on my face and neck. If it wasn't so disturbing to look at, I would have included a picture.
  • I want to go Christmas shopping, but there is always something to do for school. How is that even though I don't have a job, I still feel restricted? lame.
  • I'm in the mood for cheesecake. I think I'll make a low fat version, who wants to eat it with me?
  • Lastly, it is only Monday, but guess what, its rivalry week. I'm excited.

Study Substitute...

Projects!

With my new acquired free time I have decided to improve the decor in my apartment. After about a week of no work, I decided I was not allowed to go to home decor stores such as Home Goods, Bed Bath and Beyond or Target alone. I tend to overspend on not completely necessary items, but I think my creations have been masterpieces regardless.

First Project: New Kitchen Table Centerpiece

I went to Home Goods/TJ Maxx to see if I could find a couch cover because I think the green couch is super comfy, but not the color or pattern I had envisioned for my living room. Anyways, while I was there I kept walking passed this giant tea cup...I couldn't resist. So, I bought it, and then put cinnamon pine cones in it and called it good. Though I get teased about it daily, I enjoy it.

Second Project: Couch Cover

I swear I went all over the greater Salt Lake area to find a couch cover that wasn't $200 and that wasn't uglier than sin. I found one that works, but I am not totally in love, yet. I have to make some adjustments and add some red pillows to complete it, but this is what I have thus far.

I think I need to study more or just stop spending money :)

Rockin' Out on Halloween

On Halloween a bunch of us from Melrose decided to go SkyBox for the institute party. So, Chad, Lilliam, Amber Linn, Chris, Jennie and I ventured to the Gateway and met up with half of the East High graduating class of '04.
(Not the most flattering picture of me, but it shows the costume)

Jennie, Chad, Lilliam, Me, Amber Linn, Chris

For $5 we could play all the arcade games we could imagine, pizza we could stuff our face with and then a dance floor to dance off all the calories from the pizza. It was fun to see everyone and their dog, even though my own sister didn't recognize me.

After SkyBox I met up with Dustin since I hadn't seen him in a while. I still don't know how that kid has enough self confidence to do the things he does...he was an angel, walking around in his underwear and high heeled boots...yeah...all you can do is shake your head :)

This is Matt...I saved his life several times this night. Good thing he is cute, otherwise I might not have been so generous.

Life of the Unemployed...

So, this is the first full week of unemployment...wow. me, unemployed. Now that we're past the initial shock, let me update you on how life has been since black Wednesday at Wasatch.

Since I have been given this opportunity to kind of start over I have been re-evaluating all aspects of my life and trying to see if I can pay attention to portions that I have been neglecting. After some introspective thoughts about my life I realized how much work was my life. I was constantly on email, I talked about work in pretty much every conversation, and I felt like I was never doing enough for work. Now that it is all gone, I feel like this HUGE burden has been lifted from my shoulders. I don't have to worry about if the boss is going to come in with another project that will push back the things on my to-do list or worry that I can't seem to ever make the others in the department happy...was it ever good enough? Now it doesn't matter. Okay, enough of that.

Now what?

I still wake up fairly early just so I don't feel like I am a true slacker. I study a lot more than I have in the last 2 years. I actually see my family and friends and I can work out as much as I want.

In the next couple of weeks I will get my booty in gear and get a new position that I can take right after I graduate (7 weeks!). I am looking into more accounting positions, maybe at the big 4 even though I really don't want to do public accounting. I am open to anything at this point. I can do whatever I want :)

Here are some funny pictures from the last week to show you all I'm still alive!

When you're unemployed stupid things make you happy...like cereal from your childhood.

Chase and I being awesome in our crazy outfits. The picture doesn't really show, but I am in running shorts and he has one of his pant legs rolled up. Good ol' Sunday afternoons.

Chad and I at Secca's halloween party. Chad chose to come as himself...maybe we'll convince him to dress up next year.
Apartment #4- Lilliam, Amber, Me and Taylor. Woohoo.

Sunny Seattle!

Can I just say that I have always had this dream that Seattle was gorgeous and had little quirks that I knew I would love? ...well, it didn't let me down!

Annie and Lacy were so awesome to let me venture with them to Seattle for a nice girls weekend in which it did not rain ONE time while we were there...even though it was snowing at home. Our primary purpose was to see Weezer, but none of us had been to Seattle and therefore, it was even more fun to go exploring for the day.
After taking forever and a day trying to park (bless Annie for taking on the driver roll), we finally raced to make the 9am tour. To our minor disappointment we couldn't find the tour so we made up our own and tried to find the donuts. We succeeded. A dozen mini assorted donuts later, we were a few satisfied girls and we continued to browse.I have always been a HUGE fan of farmers markets, boutiques etc. and therefore, this place was heaven! If I were to live in Seattle, I would be at the market constantly...or at least twice a week to buy the most gorgeous flowers for the cheapest price. The picture below is of flowers that were only $5 for each bouqet. Men in Seattle have no excuse to not buy their significant others flowers, they just don't.

There were so many different stores and stands with everything from flowers to fish to dried fruit and of course jewelry (I enjoy how much Lacy enjoys jewelry). We even came across a pasta stand that sold Dark Chocolate Linguine, sounds kind of random I know, but I was so intrigued, I bought some. I'll let you know how good it was :)

Once we had our fill of the market (okay, I didn't really have my fill, but we were pressed for time), we headed to the Space Needle for a delicious lunch.

Annie and I in front of the Space Needle.

The Sky City Restaurant offered us a nice 360 degree view of Seattle every 47 minutes along with a three course brunch that was enough to feed a small army!

Too. Much. Food.

With lunch to hold us over until the middle of next week, we were ready for a little R&R before we jaunt to the H&M. We took a small nap and then were set to hit the crowds at our favorite shopping spot. None of us left H&M without a few choice items of apparel that we were excited about.
On to the main event: Weezer! Yes...yes, I know. I saw Weezer earlier in the week in Salt Lake, but the Davis crowd have been big Weezer fans for years and who was I to back out on an offer to see a great show? We had even better seats (row 6) than in Salt Lake...always a plus.

So bascially, this trip was a success! I can't wait to go back to Seattle and the market...when that will be, I have no idea, but I will be back!
*The rest of the pictures are on the photo page :)

2 Years and One Crazy Ride Later...

Me: Did you think two years ago...
Mr. Army: Nope (shaking head with amazement)

Me: Yeah, me either.
Mr. Army: (takes my hand and kisses it)

I was thinking about all that has happened in the last two years and how much it has helped me grow. I am grateful for Mr. Army and all the things he has taught me. Here is an ode to us.

  • We are the only two people I know that can fake fight and end up laughing so hard we cry as we try to stay mad.

  • I can't stay mad at Mr. Army, I just can't. And he just doesn't really ever get mad at me, which I enjoy.

  • We are truly predictable no matter how hard we try to be spontaneous...Aristo's (best greek ever) and Arrested Development = a perfect night to us.

  • We are amused by the simplest things. Give us a melted candle and we can spend an hour dipping our fingers and other objects in it to see the shapes we can make.

  • We never listen to music in the car and sometimes I take the long way home just so we can talk longer.

  • We don't cuddle in the summer because I'm a sauna. I've learned to deal with it and to love Fall even more.

  • We love to make dinner/food together. Anything from our favorite Fettucine Alfredo to Chicken Tikka Masala to Breakfast Burritos. Usually I end up handing over the reigns to Mr. Army, he is so good about it :)

  • We are never on time...that is just something I have come to terms with.

  • Utah football will always bring us together.

  • We both get "wildhair ideas" as I like to call them. Usually mine are to make some crazy new dish or to completely change our diet or run a marathon. His are more along the lines of making a zipline in the backyard or making our own big candle out of the mini ones or budgeting!

  • We are frugal, and we love it. We love that we understand each other. Sometimes we can get a little out of line, but when it comes down to it, we'd rather make hamburger helper than eat at a restaurant.

  • We are good road trippers. We don't get sick of each other easily...this is a huge feat for both of us since we are such private people.

  • We love to tease each other. The more time progresses, the more we have to tease about and the more fun it becomes!

  • We don't have to be together all the time. Mr. Army's phrase is "I know you get bored with me sometimes, so when that happens, you can hang out with other people." I have yet to be bored with him, but it's good to know I have my options.

  • And most importantly, we're a team!
This was the first picture we had taken together at the Xi Barn Dance in October of 2006.

Quiz...Modified to Fit.

So this quiz is supposed to be a Husband quiz, but I don't have a husband therefore, I am calling it my boyfriend quiz :)

Boyfriend Quiz: How well do you know your boyfriend? Answer these questions about him and find out:

1. Sitting in front of the TV, what's on the screen? UFC (or any MMA fighting), Arrested Development or the Office

2. You're out to eat; what kind of dressing does he get on his salad? Ranch and on certain occasions Blue Cheese

3. What's one food he doesn't like? Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and Spaghetti

4. You go out to a bar. What does he order? I don't think Mr. Army has ever been to a bar and every time we have gone out he has only had water...EXCEPT at the Boston Cheesecake Factory, he got Strawberry Lemonade. And yes, I do remember everything.

5. Where did he go to high school? Davis High

6. What size shoe does he wear? 8

7. If he was to collect anything, what would it be? He can be kind of a pack rat actually. At the moment I think he has like four computers that are just sitting on the kitchen table. Useful, I know. But if he had the funds to do so, I think he would have more guns.

8. What is his favorite type of sandwich? He always wants to buy ham, which I am not a huge fan of, but he seems to like it.

9. What would this person eat everyday if he could? As of late, greek food. He loves it. But he is a big fan of cheese, Brie and Gouda to be exact. That and blueberries.

10. What is his favorite cereal? He doesn't eat cereal. He likes this oatmeal called Dee's Cereal, which is crazy delicious but looks disgusting.

11. What would he never wear? Hmm...tight straight leg pants. He can go preppy but a polo is as far as we go.

12. What is his favorite sports team? The Utes. He watches NFL, but isn't partial to anyone that he has ever made known to me.

13. Who will he vote for? He is pretty conservative and I know he has issues with Obama...

14. Who is his best friend? Me, Nick, and then I would go with Lacy

15. What is something you do that he wishes you wouldn't do? I used to do this excited voice, it drove him crazy. Other than that, I'm a worrier, and sometimes I think my driving scares him.

16. How many states has he lived in? Two, Washington and Utah...and then he lived in Germany

17.What is his heritage? German

18. You bake him a cake for his birthday, what kind of cake? German Chocolate, though he would eat pretty much whatever I gave him unless it was white chocolate. "It isn't even chocolate!" -straight from him.

19. Did he play sports in high school? He was in Debate. Outside of the high school team, he played soccer and did karate.

20. What could he spend hours doing? Walking around the Home Depot. One time when we first started dating he was 2 HOURS late picking me up because he had lost track of time in the store and I didn't want to sound needy and therefore waited forever to text message him.

21. Does he belong to any men's organizations? Um, not that I am aware of.

If Mr. Army actually read this I would have him see how well I did, but I'm just going to say I'm amazing :)

My Life Motto...

Well, here I am again with another epiphany. If you have talked to me much in the last two weeks you will know that I have a new life motto...

"Live your life so that you can look back and know you lived it with dignity." - me

Since my motto isn't as elegant as some quotes I found on dignity, I will show you some of my favorites.

"I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence."
Frederick Douglas

"Human rights rest on human dignity. The dignity of man is an ideal worth fighting for and worth dying for. "
Robert Maynard

"Dignity consists not in possessing honors, but in the consciousness that we deserve them."
Aristotle

"Where is there dignity unless there is honesty?"
Cicero

"Whatever games are played with us, we must play no games with ourselves."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

I think these quotes pretty much sum up how I feel about my life.

Recently, I took this communications seminar that was given by
Val Baldwin and we took this quiz on how we respond to conflict (either silence or violence). My scores were a little out of the ordinary because I was equally silent and violent. My interpretation is...I tend to be more violent in "home life" conflict and silent in work conflict, but can be silent for home as well. Anyways, I have really wanted to work on my communication skills so I don't resort to silence OR violence when a conflict does arise.

If you know me well you know that I don't have the best track record for expressing my true feelings about situations...I tend to not trust people and the potential of a bad reaction hinders the possibility of actually telling someone how I really feel. After re-reading that I just thought "Wow, basically you spent the last 22 years lying to people to either spare their feelings or your own."

I'm lame, but guess what, I've had a chance to redeem myself and work the next 80 years (yes, I'm going to live to be over 100) to becoming a more effective communicator. I digress, I'm blabbing.

What it all comes down to...what really stuck with me from the seminar was...do not EVER use personal attacking. It is common and I know I've done it before, but no more. The recent fiasco that has plagued my existence has helped me; I have kept my dignity. I have not once personally attacked this person though she has chose to do so to me. I have kept all defenses to the situation at hand. I have not rehashed or brought in unnecessary points to be used against her.

I feel amazing about that fact. end of story.

Someone Else's Life...

So, the last week, I feel that I have been living in some alternate universe and have switched places with a total stranger that is about 14 years old and has drama seeping from her pores.
I have never been so appalled at what lengths people will go to in order to receive the outcome they desire. I know I am not the most rational person on the planet, don't worry Mr. Army has confirmed this, but even Mr. Lets Keep Kati in Line agreed that I was put through quite the whirlwind of unnecessary drama so that one person could feel justified in what she thought was right.
I am not saying that people are not entitled to their own opinions, in fact, I am in favor of people having opinions and expressing those opinions, but that's the end of it. Tell me your opinion, give me your criticism, tell me how much you agree or disapprove, but that is as far as you have the right to go. I feel that I should be able to live my life the way that I choose without other people feeling the need to interfere by causing unnecessary altercations that will get me to "change my behavior".
This last week has been nothing short of a complete shock. Mr. Army and I will sit on the couch at the end of the day in amazement at how much worse this situation is getting. I don't know how it will all work out, but it will...eventually.

The problem I see is...how do you stand up for what you know to be right when it stressing you out so much you can't see straight? I am not a quitter and I won't back down, but the emotionally discord that is resonating throughout my life is starting to become a bit much. If anyone has any ideas on how to stand up to those fighting against you while living your life...please let me know.

On East High School, On East High School!

1. Did you date someone from your school? People always thought I was dating Dustin and for most of high school I hoped that I was dating Dustin...but gay is still gay anyway you look at it :)

2. What kind of car did you drive? I drove quite the array of vehicles, but settled on the red Jeep Wrangler... 3. What was the most embarrassing moment of HS? I'm sure this isn't the most embarassing moment, but everyone remembers passing notes, right? Well...I think our friends were a little out of control about the whole ordeal. Anyways, the day Star Wars came out in theaters we all had bought tickets to see an afternoon showing. The kid I was totally in love with got ahold of some notes I had written about how much I liked him. Being the freak that he is, he decided to show the whole group of about 15 people my notes. I was mortified and kind of always thought that we would have dated in high school had he not seen those "love notes". Oh well, I dated him after high school and it was no good so I am way over the embarrassment. 4. Were you a party animal? I was the life of every party...okay, that's not true. But here are some pictures that show my attempts of being the life of the party haha.

5. Were you considered a flirt? Probably not...more like the DC prez (yep, drama club president is how one group of guy friends referred to me)
6. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir? Junior Choir and A'cappella Secretary...I love singing, but looking back I think "wow, we really were nerdy." It was a big thing at East.

7. Were you a nerd? Refer to above.
